Beyond Marketing: What your Chamber does for your business
By Rosemary Buerger • September 30, 2026
Thinking About Joining a Chamber? Let’s Answer Your Questions. Joining a chamber of commerce is an investment in your business. Before you make that investment, you want to understand what membership offers, how it works, and whether it makes sense for you. At the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce, we welcome those questions. Whether you run a small shop, manage a manufacturing facility, lead a nonprofit, or are just getting your business started, here are answers to some common questions. What does a chamber of commerce actually do? A chamber brings businesses, organizations, and community partners together to support a strong local economy. That work includes creating opportunities to meet other business leaders, offering educational programs, helping members gain visibility, and connecting people with useful resources. Sometimes the most valuable thing we do starts with a simple conversation: “Here’s what I’m struggling with. Do you know someone who can help?” Is my business too small to join? Absolutely not. You do not need a large staff, a storefront, or an established customer base to belong. Small businesses often have limited time and resources. Membership gives you opportunities to build relationships, learn from other business owners, and help people become familiar with what you offer. You do not have to have everything figured out before you join. What if we are a large employer or manufacturer? Chamber membership can help larger employers stay connected to the communities where their employees live and work. It creates opportunities to connect with other employers, local leaders, service providers, and workforce resources. Larger businesses also bring valuable experience to the conversation. A strong chamber makes room for both the needs of a small business owner and the challenges of a major employer. Do I have to attend every meeting? No. We understand that running a business comes first. You can participate in ways that fit your schedule and goals. That might mean attending a luncheon, stopping by Coffee & Connections, joining a Lunch & Learn, or reaching out when you need a resource. We encourage you to make time for a few events because relationships grow through interaction. Start with one that interests you and build from there. What if I don’t know anyone—or networking makes me uncomfortable? You are welcome exactly as you are. You do not have to be outgoing or comfortable walking into a room full of strangers. As an introvert myself, I understand that taking the first step can be the hardest part. Let us know you are coming, and we can help with introductions. You can start with a conversation with one person. Networking often begins with listening, asking a question, and finding something in common. Will joining bring me more customers? Membership creates opportunities for people to discover your business and get to know you. It can support visibility, referrals, and relationships that lead to future business. It does not guarantee sales. The value grows when you help us understand your business, use the opportunities available, and stay connected. People need to know what you do before they can recommend you. How can the Chamber help promote my business? Members can connect with the Chamber about business news, upcoming milestones, ribbon cuttings, and opportunities to gain visibility through Chamber communications and programs. The best place to start is by telling us what is happening at your business. Are you opening a location, celebrating an anniversary, or introducing something new? That conversation helps us identify an appropriate opportunity. Some promotional programs and sponsorships have an additional cost. We can explain what is included in membership and what is available separately. Do I have to sponsor events, too? Sponsorship is optional and separate from membership. It offers another way to support Chamber programs and put your business in front of an audience. You can choose opportunities that fit your goals and budget, but sponsorship is not a requirement for belonging or participating. Do I have to be located in Ottawa? The Ottawa Area Chamber serves Ottawa and the surrounding area. Our business community extends across village boundaries, and so do the relationships we help build. If your organization does business in the area or wants to strengthen connections here, we welcome a conversation about membership. How much does membership cost? Membership options depend on the type of organization and the membership structure that fits your business. Contact us, and we will walk you through the available options, explain what is included, and answer your questions. We want you to understand your investment before you join. What should I do after joining? Start by helping us get to know you. Tell us about your business, your goals, and the challenges you are facing. Make sure your business information is accurate, watch for Chamber communications, and choose an upcoming event to attend. You can also ask us, “Where should I start?” We are happy to help you find an opportunity that makes sense for you. Is membership worth it? The answer depends on what you need and how you use it. For one member, the value may come from a helpful introduction. For another, it may be an educational program, greater visibility, or a connection that helps solve a business problem. You may not see the full value at your first event. Relationships take time, and their value often grows as people get to know you and your business. Have a question we didn’t answer? Let’s talk. You do not need to have a polished pitch or know exactly what you need. Tell us a little about your business and what you hope to accomplish. At the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce, we are here to help you get connected—and we would love to get to know you. Give us a call at 419-523-3141- We are here to help!

Could you save? It's worth checking

When the Chamber’s Work Comes Alive There is a moment during our annual golf outing when we can pause, look across the course, and see teams laughing, volunteers visiting with golfers, and businesses connecting. Those are the moments that remind us why we do what we do. Throughout the year, the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce works to strengthen relationships, support our members, and create opportunities for people to connect. Much of that work happens behind the scenes through emails, phone calls, meetings, introductions, promotions, and planning. The golf outing is where so much of that work comes alive. We see people who first met at a Chamber event enjoy conversations like old friends. We watch longtime business connections grow into genuine friendships. We hear conversations that may lead to future partnerships, referrals, or new ideas. We watch our work come to life, right in front of our eyes. We also see people simply enjoying one another’s company, and that matters, too. Strong business communities are not built only through transactions. They are built through trust, familiarity, and shared experiences. They grow when people know one another well enough to make an introduction, recommend a service, or pick up the phone when someone needs help. Our golf outing creates an entire day for those relationships to grow. The friendly competition helps people relax. The hole games give every team something to laugh about. Volunteers get to connect with golfers throughout the day, while sponsors and participating businesses gain valuable visibility. Even the conversations over breakfast, in the golf carts, and during lunch contribute to the sense of community. As Chamber staff, one of our favorite parts of the outing is watching everyone have a good time. We spend months organizing the details, gathering sponsors, recruiting volunteers, and preparing for the day. When the outing finally arrives, we get to see those plans become something much bigger than a schedule or checklist. We see relationships happening in real time. That is the heart of the Chamber’s work. We bring people together and create the opportunity, but our members make the connections meaningful. At the end of the outing, prizes will be awarded, raffles will be claimed, and the scorecards will eventually be forgotten. What lasts are the conversations, memories, and relationships created along the way. Our golf outing may be one day on the calendar, but the connections made on the course can strengthen our business community throughout the entire year. That is why this event means so much to us. It is fun, it is competitive, and it is one of the clearest reminders that when people come together, our Chamber’s mission truly comes alive.

The Volunteers Who Make Every Hole More Fun Golfers may be the ones keeping score, but some of the best networking at the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing happens without anyone ever swinging a club. Throughout the course, our volunteers welcome teams to the special games and activities set up at different holes. As each group arrives, the volunteers explain the game, encourage a little friendly competition, and usually share plenty of laughter with the golfers. These stops may only last a few minutes, but they create something valuable. Our volunteers have the opportunity to talk with every team that comes through their hole. Over the course of the day, that can mean meeting business owners, employees, and community leaders from throughout the area. It is a unique networking opportunity because the conversations happen naturally. There is no pressure to deliver a formal introduction or make a business pitch. The game provides an easy starting point, and the relaxed atmosphere allows people to enjoy talking with one another. By the time the final teams come through, volunteers have often made new connections, caught up with familiar faces, and learned more about businesses they may not have known before. They also get a front-row seat to the personality of the outing. They see the golfer who confidently steps up to the challenge, the teammate offering questionable advice, and the entire team celebrating a great shot as if they have just won a championship. They encourage the teams, join in the jokes, and help create the welcoming atmosphere people remember. Our volunteers are a huge part of the day. They keep the games moving, represent the Chamber, and make every team feel welcome. Their energy helps turn a round of golf into a true community event. You do not have to be a golfer to be part of the outing. Volunteering is one of the best ways to participate, meet people, and experience the fun of the day. At its heart, networking is simply about people taking the time to talk, listen, and build connections. Our volunteers make space for that to happen, one team and one hole at a time. If you have ever wondered whether volunteering at the golf outing is worthwhile, the answer is easy: absolutely. Spend the day with us. You may be surprised by how many people you meet—and how much fun you have along the way.

A Little Friendly Rivalry Goes a Long Way There is something about a golf outing that brings out everyone’s competitive side—in the best possible way. Teams arrive ready to have fun, but it usually doesn't take long for the friendly rivalry to begin. Good-natured debates over the best shot, plenty of teasing after a missed putt, and team members who are quick to remind everyone of the one incredible drive they made earlier in the day. Some teams come hoping to win. Others are simply hoping to avoid losing too many golf balls. Either way, everyone becomes part of the fun. That lighthearted competition is one of the things that makes the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing so special. It gives people an opportunity to step away from their offices, job sites, and everyday responsibilities and connect in a more relaxed setting. Networking doesn't always happen across a conference table or during a formal introduction. Sometimes it happens while riding together in a golf cart. It happens while waiting for the group ahead to finish a hole or laughing together after a shot does not go quite as planned. Those moments give people time to talk, not just about their businesses, but about their families, interests, and experiences. They discover shared connections and begin building relationships that can continue long after the outing is over. The friendly rivalry also helps break down barriers. Titles become less important when everyone is trying to sink the same difficult putt. Business owners, employees, community leaders, and guests can enjoy the day together. Of course, we still want to know which team will take home the top prize, and we are always ready to celebrate the winners. But the greatest victories often cannot be found on the scoreboard. They are the new introductions, strengthened friendships, and unexpected conversations that happen along the way. At the Chamber, relationships are at the heart of a strong business community. Our golf outing gives those relationships room to grow, with a healthy dose of competition, plenty of laughter, and more than a few stories to tell afterward. So bring your best game, or at least your best sense of humor. We will see you on the course next August!

More Than a Photo Opportunity: Why Ribbon Cuttings Matter A ribbon cutting may last only a few minutes, but its impact can reach far beyond the moment the ribbon falls. Whether celebrating a grand opening, a new location, an expansion, a renovation, or a major business milestone, a ribbon cutting brings people together to recognize the hard work behind a local business. It is both a celebration and a powerful way to introduce—or reintroduce—a business to the community. Celebrating the People Behind the Business Every business milestone represents countless hours of planning, problem-solving, investment, and perseverance. A ribbon cutting creates an opportunity to pause and recognize the owners, employees, families, partners, and supporters who helped make that milestone possible. For a new business owner, it can mark the realization of a long-held dream. For an established company, it may celebrate years of growth and continued commitment to the community. In either case, the event reminds us that behind every storefront and organization are people who have chosen to invest their time, talents, and resources locally. Increasing Visibility Ribbon cuttings help businesses tell their stories. The event gives owners a chance to explain what they offer, why they chose the community, and how they hope to serve local customers. Photos, videos, media coverage, and social media posts can extend the reach of the celebration, helping introduce the business to people who may not have discovered it otherwise. This visibility is especially valuable for businesses without a traditional storefront. A ribbon cutting can shine a light on home-based businesses, service providers, nonprofit organizations, and companies that have expanded or added new services. Building Valuable Connections A ribbon cutting brings together business leaders, customers, community partners, elected officials, friends, and neighbors. Those introductions can lead to valuable relationships, referrals, collaborations, and future opportunities. For business owners, the event is often one of the first chances to welcome the broader community into their space and begin building a local network. For attendees, it offers an opportunity to learn about a new organization, meet its team, and discover another reason to support the local economy. These connections are at the heart of a strong business community. Strengthening Community Pride When a business opens, grows, or reinvests in the area, the entire community has something to celebrate. Local businesses create jobs, support community organizations, contribute to the tax base, and add character to the places we call home. Their success helps strengthen the economic vitality and quality of life of our region. Attending a ribbon cutting sends a meaningful message to business owners: We see your investment, we value your presence, and we want you to succeed. That encouragement matters—particularly during the early days of opening or the uncertainty that can accompany a major expansion. Making the Most of the Moment A successful ribbon cutting does not have to be elaborate. The most memorable events are welcoming, authentic, and centered on the business’s story. Business owners can make the most of the occasion by inviting customers, employees, neighboring businesses, family members, and community partners. Offering tours, demonstrations, refreshments, or a brief introduction to the organization can help guests feel more connected to the celebration. Most importantly, owners should take time to enjoy the moment. Milestones deserve to be recognized. The Chamber Is Here to Celebrate With You At the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce, we believe every ribbon cutting is a celebration of entrepreneurship, investment, and community progress. We are proud to help our members mark important milestones, share their stories, and build connections throughout the Ottawa area. A ribbon cutting is more than a ceremony. It is a public welcome, a show of community support, and the beginning of a new chapter. If your business is opening, expanding, relocating, renovating, or celebrating a significant milestone, we would be honored to help you commemorate the occasion. Contact the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce to learn more about scheduling a ribbon cutting.

What Comes With Your Chamber Membership? One of the most common questions we hear is: “What exactly comes with my Chamber membership?” It is a good question—and one we want every member to feel comfortable asking. Your Chamber membership is more than a listing in a directory or an invitation to attend events. It is an investment in your business, your relationships and the strength of our local business community. Understanding the opportunities available to you is the first step toward making the most of that investment. Visibility and Promotion We want people to know who our members are and what they offer. Your membership includes opportunities such as: A listing in our online member directory New-member recognition Social media sharing and promotion Opportunities to participate in Member Spotlights and other Chamber features Business referrals when someone contacts the Chamber looking for a product or service The opportunity to host a ribbon cutting The ability to share business news, events, job openings, and milestones through Chamber communication channels One of the easiest ways to receive more value from your membership is to keep us informed. We cannot share what we do not know, so send us your updates and let us help spread the word. Networking and Relationship-Building Some of the most valuable benefits of Chamber membership come from the relationships you build. Members are invited to participate in: Monthly membership meetings Coffee & Connections Chamber Cheers After Hours Lunch & Learn programs Annual Chamber events Collaborative programs and community initiatives You do not have to attend everything to benefit from your membership. Choose the opportunities that work best for your goals, schedule, and comfort level. Sometimes one conversation, introduction, or new relationship is all it takes to open the door to a future customer, partnership, or resource. Education and Business Resources Throughout the year, we provide educational programs and share information designed to help members make informed decisions and strengthen their organizations. Members may also have access to programs and potential savings related to: Group health plans Dental and prescription programs Workers’ compensation Energy savings Shipping Payroll and payment services Professional development and business education Some of these benefits are offered through regional or statewide Chamber partnerships and may have separate eligibility or enrollment requirements. If you are unsure where to begin, please ask us. We can help connect you with the appropriate information. Advocacy and Community Representation Not every part of your Chamber membership is something you can immediately see. Behind the scenes, we are building relationships, sharing business concerns, and participating in local, regional, and statewide conversations. We collaborate with community organizations, other chambers and business advocates to make sure our members have access to information and a voice in the conversations that affect them. We also help connect members with organizations, programs, and decision-makers who may be able to assist. Your membership helps us continue representing and supporting the local business community—even when that work is happening quietly in the background. How Can You Find Out More? Every business has different goals. One member may want to meet more people. Another may need help increasing visibility. Someone else may be interested in cost-saving programs, professional development, or becoming more involved in the community. The best way to learn about your membership is to talk with us. We would be happy to discuss your goals and help identify the benefits and opportunities that make the most sense for your business. Your Chamber membership should never feel like something you simply renew once a year. It should be a relationship, a resource, and a connection you can use throughout the year. Take Action This Week Choose one part of your membership that you have not used before. Send us a business update. Attend an event. Review the available cost-saving programs. Ask about a Member Spotlight. Or simply reach out and say, “Help me better understand my membership.” We are here to help you make the most of your investment.

Why Are Chamber Sponsorships Separate From Membership? Occasionally, we are asked why sponsorship opportunities are not included in the cost of Chamber membership. The simplest answer is that membership and sponsorship serve two different purposes. Your annual membership connects your business to the Chamber’s ongoing services, resources, relationships and opportunities. A sponsorship is an optional marketing investment that provides your business with additional visibility through a specific event, program, or campaign. Both are valuable—but they are not the same thing. What Does Membership Provide? Your membership supports your connection to the Chamber year-round. It includes access to networking opportunities, business resources, educational programs, referrals, promotional support, advocacy and participation in the wider Chamber community. Membership also helps support the behind-the-scenes work we do every day: answering business questions, making introductions, sharing resources, promoting members and representing the interests of our business community. These benefits are available to members whether or not they ever purchase a sponsorship. What Does a Sponsorship Provide? A sponsorship gives a business additional, targeted recognition connected to a specific Chamber opportunity. Depending on the sponsorship, recognition may include: Your logo on event materials Social media recognition Mentions in Chamber emails Signage at an event Recognition during announcements Promotional placement connected to a particular program Opportunities to reach a specific audience Businesses may choose to sponsor a luncheon, Coffee & Connections, the Annual Dinner and Awards, the Golf Outing or another Chamber event or initiative. Each opportunity offers a different audience and type of exposure. That allows a business to select the sponsorships that best align with its goals. Why Not Include Sponsorships in Annual Dues? Every Chamber member is different. Some businesses want additional brand visibility throughout the year. Others prefer to focus on networking, referrals, education or cost-saving benefits. A small business may have a very different marketing budget from a large employer or regional organization. Keeping sponsorships separate gives every member the freedom to decide: Which events or programs fit their audience What type of visibility would benefit their business How much they want to invest in additional promotion When a sponsorship fits their marketing budget Which Chamber initiatives they most want to support If sponsorship costs were included in annual dues, every member would be paying for the same level and type of promotion—even if it did not fit their goals. Separate sponsorships allow us to keep membership accessible while offering additional promotional opportunities to the businesses that want them. What Do Sponsorship Dollars Support? Sponsorships do more than place a logo on a sign. They help cover the additional costs of producing events, programs and community initiatives. Those expenses may include venues, meals, speakers, marketing materials, entertainment, printing, supplies and other event needs. Sponsorship support allows us to create stronger experiences, expand our promotion, and keep registration costs reasonable. It also helps the Chamber continue developing programs that bring people together and create value for our members. When a business becomes a sponsor, it is investing in both its own visibility and the success of the program it supports. Do I Have to Sponsor to Be an Engaged Member? Absolutely not. Sponsorship is never required to be an active, valued member of the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce. You can attend events, build relationships, use member resources, share your business news, and participate in many Chamber promotional opportunities without purchasing a sponsorship. Sponsorship is simply an optional tool for businesses that want increased visibility or a stronger connection to a particular event or initiative. How Do I Know Which Sponsorship Is Right for My Business? Start with your goals. Are you hoping to reach other business leaders? Increase community awareness? Promote a particular service? Support an event that matters to your employees or customers? Once you know what you hope to accomplish, we can help you review the available opportunities and find the best fit. Not every sponsorship will be right for every business—and that is perfectly fine. Our goal is to help you select an opportunity that makes sense for your audience, budget, and marketing priorities. Take Action This Week If you are curious about Chamber sponsorships, reach out and ask us what is currently available. We would be happy to explain the options, audiences, and recognition connected to each opportunity. There is no obligation to participate. Sometimes a short conversation is all it takes to discover an opportunity that is a natural fit for your business. Membership keeps you connected. Sponsorship helps you stand out. Together, they offer different ways to participate in and support our business community.
