When the Chamber’s Work Comes Alive There is a moment during our annual golf outing when we can pause, look across the course, and see teams laughing, volunteers visiting with golfers, and businesses connecting. Those are the moments that remind us why we do what we do. Throughout the year, the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce works to strengthen relationships, support our members, and create opportunities for people to connect. Much of that work happens behind the scenes through emails, phone calls, meetings, introductions, promotions, and planning. The golf outing is where so much of that work comes alive. We see people who first met at a Chamber event enjoy conversations like old friends. We watch longtime business connections grow into genuine friendships. We hear conversations that may lead to future partnerships, referrals, or new ideas. We watch our work come to life, right in front of our eyes. We also see people simply enjoying one another’s company, and that matters, too. Strong business communities are not built only through transactions. They are built through trust, familiarity, and shared experiences. They grow when people know one another well enough to make an introduction, recommend a service, or pick up the phone when someone needs help. Our golf outing creates an entire day for those relationships to grow. The friendly competition helps people relax. The hole games give every team something to laugh about. Volunteers get to connect with golfers throughout the day, while sponsors and participating businesses gain valuable visibility. Even the conversations over breakfast, in the golf carts, and during lunch contribute to the sense of community. As Chamber staff, one of our favorite parts of the outing is watching everyone have a good time. We spend months organizing the details, gathering sponsors, recruiting volunteers, and preparing for the day. When the outing finally arrives, we get to see those plans become something much bigger than a schedule or checklist. We see relationships happening in real time. That is the heart of the Chamber’s work. We bring people together and create the opportunity, but our members make the connections meaningful. At the end of the outing, prizes will be awarded, raffles will be claimed, and the scorecards will eventually be forgotten. What lasts are the conversations, memories, and relationships created along the way. Our golf outing may be one day on the calendar, but the connections made on the course can strengthen our business community throughout the entire year. That is why this event means so much to us. It is fun, it is competitive, and it is one of the clearest reminders that when people come together, our Chamber’s mission truly comes alive.

The Volunteers Who Make Every Hole More Fun Golfers may be the ones keeping score, but some of the best networking at the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing happens without anyone ever swinging a club. Throughout the course, our volunteers welcome teams to the special games and activities set up at different holes. As each group arrives, the volunteers explain the game, encourage a little friendly competition, and usually share plenty of laughter with the golfers.  These stops may only last a few minutes, but they create something valuable. Our volunteers have the opportunity to talk with every team that comes through their hole. Over the course of the day, that can mean meeting business owners, employees, and community leaders from throughout the area. It is a unique networking opportunity because the conversations happen naturally. There is no pressure to deliver a formal introduction or make a business pitch. The game provides an easy starting point, and the relaxed atmosphere allows people to enjoy talking with one another. By the time the final teams come through, volunteers have often made new connections, caught up with familiar faces, and learned more about businesses they may not have known before. They also get a front-row seat to the personality of the outing. They see the golfer who confidently steps up to the challenge, the teammate offering questionable advice, and the entire team celebrating a great shot as if they have just won a championship. They keep the games moving, represent the Chamber, and make every team feel welcome. Their energy helps turn a round of golf into a true community event. One of the most common questions we hear is: “What exactly comes with my Chamber membership?” It is a good question—and one we want every member to feel comfortable asking. Understanding the opportunities available to you is the first step toward making the most of that investment. Visibility and Promotion We want people to know who our members are and what they offer. Why Are Chamber Sponsorships Separate From Membership? Occasionally, we are asked why sponsorship opportunities are not included in the cost of Chamber membership. The simplest answer is that membership and sponsorship serve two different purposes. Your annual membership connects your business to the Chamber’s ongoing services, resources, relationships and opportunities. A sponsorship is an optional marketing investment that provides your business with additional visibility through a specific event, program, or campaign. Both are valuable—but they are not the same thing. What Does Membership Provide? Your membership supports your connection to the Chamber year-round. It includes access to networking opportunities, business resources, educational programs, referrals, promotional support, advocacy and participation in the wider Chamber community. Membership also helps support the behind-the-scenes work we do every day: answering business questions, making introductions, sharing resources, promoting members and representing the interests of our business community. These benefits are available to members whether or not they ever purchase a sponsorship. What Does a Sponsorship Provide? A sponsorship gives a business additional, targeted recognition connected to a specific Chamber opportunity. Depending on the sponsorship, recognition may include: Your logo on event materials Social media recognition Mentions in Chamber emails Signage at an event Recognition during announcements Promotional placement connected to a particular program Opportunities to reach a specific audience Businesses may choose to sponsor a luncheon, Coffee & Connections, the Annual Dinner and Awards, the Golf Outing or another Chamber event or initiative. Each opportunity offers a different audience and type of exposure. That allows a business to select the sponsorships that best align with its goals. Why Not Include Sponsorships in Annual Dues? Every Chamber member is different. Some businesses want additional brand visibility throughout the year. Others prefer to focus on networking, referrals, education or cost-saving benefits. A small business may have a very different marketing budget from a large employer or regional organization. Keeping sponsorships separate gives every member the freedom to decide: Which events or programs fit their audience What type of visibility would benefit their business How much they want to invest in additional promotion When a sponsorship fits their marketing budget Which Chamber initiatives they most want to support If sponsorship costs were included in annual dues, every member would be paying for the same level and type of promotion—even if it did not fit their goals. Separate sponsorships allow us to keep membership accessible while offering additional promotional opportunities to the businesses that want them. What Do Sponsorship Dollars Support? Sponsorships do more than place a logo on a sign. They help cover the additional costs of producing events, programs and community initiatives. Those expenses may include venues, meals, speakers, marketing materials, entertainment, printing, supplies and other event needs. Sponsorship support allows us to create stronger experiences, expand our promotion, and keep registration costs reasonable. It also helps the Chamber continue developing programs that bring people together and create value for our members. When a business becomes a sponsor, it is investing in both its own visibility and the success of the program it supports. Do I Have to Sponsor to Be an Engaged Member? Absolutely not. Sponsorship is never required to be an active, valued member of the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce. You can attend events, build relationships, use member resources, share your business news, and participate in many Chamber promotional opportunities without purchasing a sponsorship. Sponsorship is simply an optional tool for businesses that want increased visibility or a stronger connection to a particular event or initiative. Meet Rosemary People often ask what drew me to chamber work, and the answer really begins with my childhood. I grew up in a military family, which meant moving frequently along the East Coast and even living in Germany for a time. When you're constantly starting over, finding your place in a new community becomes incredibly important. Community meant a lot then, and it still means everything to me today. One of the things I always loved about Putnam County when we visited was how community-oriented it felt. People genuinely seemed to care about one another. Neighbors supported neighbors. Businesses supported businesses. People showed up—not because they had to, but because they wanted to. That stayed with me. I also grew up with a simple message that has shaped the way I live and lead: Always be willing to help, even when it doesn't directly affect you. Today, that philosophy guides the way I approach my role as Executive Director of the Ottawa Area Chamber. While I'm naturally an introvert, one of the greatest joys of my job is building relationships with our members. To me, success isn't about meeting someone once or handing them a business card. It's about getting to know you. I want to learn about your business, understand your goals, celebrate your successes, and be there when challenges arise. The better I know you, the better I can connect you with opportunities, resources, and other people who can help your business grow. One of my biggest hopes is that the Chamber becomes one of your greatest champions. Yes, we want the public to know your business, support your business, and become your customers. Because that's what community is all about. Meet Kelly Kelly grew up in the small village of Deshler, where she learned the value of community from a young age. That sense of community has carried forward into just about everything she does. Kelly is naturally friendly, caring, and genuinely wants the best for everyone she meets. She is often the extroverted counterpart to Rosemary's introvertedness, bringing warmth, energy, and connection into every conversation. She knows what it means to lend a helping hand, and she also understands the hard work and sacrifice it takes to run a business. As our Director of Member Engagement, Kelly plays an important role in helping members feel welcomed, supported, and connected. Whether she is answering questions, helping deliver materials, coordinating communications, assisting with events, or cheering on members behind the scenes, Kelly brings heart to the work she does every day. One of Kelly's greatest strengths is making people feel seen. She celebrates member successes, helps create meaningful connections, and brings a genuine enthusiasm to supporting local businesses.
