It's more than shopping

About once a week, I walk into a local coffee shop for my daily dose of caffeine to keep the day moving.

There’s one in particular where, almost without fail, a group of gentlemen from the community are gathered around a table solving the world’s problems. I place my order, walk over, and ask what issues they’re tackling today. They usually tell me they’re causing more than they’re solving.

They know my name. They welcome me into their ongoing debate. A few times, they’ve even invited me to sit down — something I haven’t taken them up on yet, but probably should. I have a feeling there’s a lot of wisdom at that table.

That’s what it feels like to truly immerse yourself in being local.

It’s those small moments — walking into a shop where they know your name, or better yet, know your order before you say it. It’s the haircut the week before your wedding, when the barber who’s been cutting your hair since you were little is extra careful not to take too much off the top. It’s the deep breath during a massage after a long week of teaching our local children and being on your feet all day. It’s bringing your car into the shop, trying to imitate the “funny noise” it’s making, and the mechanic nodding because somehow, they know exactly what you mean.

These are the everyday moments we often take for granted.

But they are the threads that weave a community together.

Choosing local isn’t just about convenience. It’s about connection. It’s about choosing to be part of something bigger than a transaction. It’s about investing in the people who invest right back into us.

They quietly fix the car for someone who can’t quite pay the full bill — because they understand how much that vehicle means to a family’s livelihood.

Focus on what matters

Focus.

Every year, I personally choose a word that guides how I want to approach the year ahead. This year, I decided to do the same for the Chamber—and the word is Focus.

Focus on what matters.

Focus on what works.

Focus on building meaningful relationships.

Focus on highlighting our business members.

Just… focus.

This word has been one of my favorites for many years because I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it can be. When I worked in real estate, I learned quickly that what I focused on was exactly what showed up. If I went into a listing appointment assuming I wouldn’t get it, I didn’t. If I doubted I’d find the right buyer, I wouldn’t.

So I changed my focus.

Instead of concentrating on what might go wrong, I focused on what I wanted to happen. I set a goal to help 20 families buy or sell their homes in a year. I created a visual tracking sheet—listings highlighted in green when they sold, yellow when they went under contract, red when I lost the opportunity. That system worked for my brain, but something still felt off.

So I changed it again.

I replaced listings with little gingerbread people. Each one represented a family. Suddenly, my focus shifted from transactions to people—and everything changed. I became laser-focused on helping others and leaned into my strength of building relationships. Although I had been working in real estate since 2006 and officially selling since 2008, it wasn’t until 2012—when I fully aligned my focus with my passion for helping people—that my business truly took off.

Because that’s what we do. We help people.

And that same mindset is what drives this Chamber.

Our business partners aren’t numbers—they’re people. Their goals matter. What’s important to them is important to us. Whether that means bringing a class to them, connecting them to a service, offering a benefit, or simply listening, we meet them where they are. We listen. We care. And we work to help them become the best version of their business.

It’s never about the numbers. It’s always about the people.

So here’s our challenge to you:

Gerding Ditching: A Legacy of Excellence in Putnam County Since 1911

In the heart of Putnam County, a century-old business continues to make its mark. Gerding Ditching, a fourth-generation family-owned and operated company, has proudly served the region for over 110 years. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with current owners Jesse and Casslyn Gerding to learn more about their rich history and ongoing commitment to quality work.

The company’s story begins in 1911 with Jesse’s great-grandfather, Henry Gerding. What started as a one-man operation has grown into a trusted name across northwest Ohio, known for reliable service in agricultural, residential, and commercial excavation. Henry Gerding started ditching, or draining water, for other land owners by hand, using only a spade to install clay tile. In 1920, he purchased his first steam-powered wheel machine and set in motion a family business that would endure generations.

Today, Gerding Ditching offers a wide range of services. They do full systematic tile plans, replacing old outlets that were put in maybe 100 years ago, and water control structures for livestock farmers to prevent manure from getting into streams.

Winter has once again blanketed Ohio in snow, a quiet reminder of nature's cycles. The landscape feels dormant, buried beneath layers of white. Yet, beneath the surface, life persists, preparing for its eventual resurgence. In just 65 days, spring will arrive, bringing new growth. Flowers will bloom, leaves will return to the trees, and the chill of winter will recede into memory, as it does every year.

For businesses, the post-holiday period often mirrors this quieter, reflective time. It can feel like a lull as customers recover from holiday spending. But this season is not a time to rest; it’s an opportunity to prepare for the busy days ahead. Now is the perfect time to lay the groundwork for a successful spring.

Use this time to plan and strategize. Outline your goals for spring sales and create a marketing plan to support them. Take advantage of the slower pace to train your team, organize inventory, and refresh your space with a deep clean. Fear is a funny thing, isn’t it? It’s that uncomfortable feeling that creeps in when we’re about to make a big decision, especially in the business world. Whether it’s pitching a new idea, taking a bold step into an unfamiliar market, or simply asking for a promotion, fear often whispers in our ears, "What if you get rejected?" But here's the thing: fear is not just a hindrance; it’s also a powerful motivator. Let’s explore how fear can shape our business decisions and how we can turn it into a tool for growth and success.

The Paralyzing Power of Fear

Fear of rejection is one of the most common reasons people hold back professionally. This fear can manifest in various ways, such as not applying for a job you feel unqualified for, avoiding asking for a raise, or hesitating to present a new idea to your team. The irony is that while fear aims to protect us from potential pain, it can also prevent us from seizing opportunities that could lead to substantial growth.

So how do you turn fear into your friend? Odd concept I know but it's got to be an alley not an enemy. The first point is to recognize it. Acknowledging that fear is a powerful tool. Don't avoid it, but instead push through it. My Granny used to say, "Good or bad you have to go straight through it to get to the other side." She was right. Once you identify the cause of your fear, you can start addressing it.

Often changing your mindset can help you see what's on the other side. Is it rejection you fear? If you don't go for it, then you yourself have rejected the idea that was driving you. You will always face rejection. Knowing that will help you prepare mentally to just ask regardless of the outcome. Get a mentor to help be your sounding board so that you can make your pitch to someone you trust so you can work through the potential sticking points. Prepare to plan and plan to prepare is a motto that will help you as well. Make a plan of action so that you know what is in front of you when you push through your fear.

Embracing the Unknown

Ultimately, fear of rejection and the unknown is a natural part of life, especially in business. However, allowing fear to dictate our decisions can lead to missed opportunities. By acknowledging fear, reframing our mindset, and taking proactive steps, we can turn fear into a powerful motivator that drives us toward growth and success.

So the next time you find yourself hesitating because of fear, remember this: every successful person has faced fear and rejection at some point in their lives or career. Insights from the Amazing Shake Competition: Empowering Future Leaders

Participating in the Amazing Shake competition with 7th and 8th-grade students from Ottawa Elementary and Glandorf Elementary was an incredible honor. Kelly and I had the privilege of serving as judges at the Community booth on day one, where students were tasked with proposing ideas to improve our community. The responses we received from these bright young minds were nothing short of inspiring.

One student suggested creating a place where everyone could feel included, ensuring no one would feel left out. Another student highlighted the need for safer crosswalks. By mid-morning, we were astounded by the depth and thoughtfulness of their ideas.

This experience taught us several important lessons:

Engaging Young Minds: When we take the time to talk to children and ask for their opinions on community improvement, their answers can be surprisingly profound. Many students expressed a desire for screen-free zones, emphasizing the joy of meeting people and having face-to-face conversations.
Kid-Friendly Activities: There was a clear call for more activities tailored to young people. Some students were thrilled to hear that the GoOttawa team is already working on initiatives they care about.
More Family-Oriented Dining Options: A significant number of students voiced a preference for more restaurants without bars attached, noting that our town has plenty of bars but could use more diverse dining options.
Environmental Concerns: Our young participants are deeply concerned about environmental issues. They proposed reducing light pollution to enjoy clearer night skies and to help migrating birds. They also advocated for community gardens to grow fresh vegetables and emphasized the importance of waste reduction and increased recycling efforts. Many expressed a willingness to participate in programs aimed at achieving these goals.

What struck me most was the students' gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the competition. Their enthusiasm and insightful ideas give me hope that future generations will not only care for each other but will also be dedicated to protecting our planet.

We eagerly anticipate next year's Amazing Shake competition, confident that it will continue to be a source of inspiration and optimism for our community's future.

Gilboa Quarry is a natural spring-fed crystal clear lake that is a premier destination for divers, and snorkelers. They travel from all over to dive in the clear waters of the quarry. They have been serving the dive community for over thirty years. We met with Cheyenne Klausing and Allison Dawson to learn more about the quarry.

The quarry started off as a limestone quarry in the 1890s and grew over the years into the Ottawa Stone Company. In the 1990’s they hit a spring and it became the Gilboa Quarry. It passed through several owners until it landed with its owners, Full Tank, LLC. They’ve worked over the last few years to bring it to what it is today.

Today you’ll find a campsite, scuba lessons, scuba gear rental, freediving, snorkeling, paddle boarding, and more. There is something for everyone to take part in or just enjoy the beach. Campsites are available for visitors or locals who just want to get away. There is a camp store on-site to purchase quick supplies. Gilbo Grindz is also available and is even open on Sunday serving up a variety of items and coffee.

Allison and Cheyenne let us in on what was coming: Nemo’s Garden. It is the first of its kind in the United States. The first Nemo’s Garden was started in 2012 in Italy. An underwater garden in a biosphere to grow plants such as basil below the water's surface. The team debuted the garden this summer and shared a video feed of the garden on their website. They will offer tours in the future.

1820 BrewWerks is located in Kalida, Ohio in the quaint downtown district. The concept for 1820 BrewWerks came from their beginnings of brewing their own beer. They discovered that they had all the components to make the beer right here in Putnam County. The only thing missing was the brewery and the brewers. So, the idea began without the restaurant aspect. The restaurant actually became part of it and started on a napkin at a charity event. They knew they wanted to create an atmosphere that was welcoming to all. The name 1820 BrewWerks came from the year that Putnam County was established. It was also a play on the year that they began the business in 2018.

Founded by Andrew and Tessa Wehri and Butch and Amy Brinkman, this establishment combines a love for brewing with a passion for community. It shows in the way they approach life and business. They genuinely care about the people who work at the restaurant and each customer who comes through their doors. That same care goes into the carefully selected menu of beers and food.

They partner with multiple locally owned businesses for everything from hops to lettuce. They work with these establishments: Barley Five Malt House, Frogtown Hops, Kaufman Hydroponics, Kneuven Creamery, Hilltop Honey, Niese Ag, and Well Grounded. The community connections between these businesses are an effort to work together to create a thriving community.

Amy Brinkman also started Friends in Motion with 1820 which is a walking/running group that meets on Monday evenings. Community members come in and discuss topics that are relevant to being healthy. It’s a group that can get as big as 60 to 89 people. It’s bringing communities together in an effort to just move together.

1820 BrewWerks hosts many different events. You can find trivia there on Thursdays and there is more to come. They will have an expansion soon with an events and overflow room later this fall. Hone your skills to grow

My mentor, Zan Monroe, told a class I was in once about how he became a better tennis player. Every day he would practice and learn something that would improve his swing, serve, or backhand. He continues to practice because you can always improve. It's the same with improving your leadership skills. You must practice, learn and improve daily. It's the long game of building a better business.

I also thought about how I began my professional development and growth. It started by attending the state real estate conference in Myrtle Beach, SC. A group of my friends and I went because A: it was at the beach and B: we would earn our CE credit for the year. I'd been a realtor for about 2 or 3 years at this point. But I hadn't looked at myself as a business owner. I learned so much at that conference that opened my eyes to how I would manage my business going forward. I needed to continually learn my craft, even while I was practicing it. It led me to great heights as a leader within my real estate community. I also developed skills that I could carry forward in anything I did. Even now as the Executive Director of the chamber, I still reach out to my mentor. I continue to learn new ways to improve upon what I do daily.

Developing leaders and leadership skills are vital to our businesses. Currently, the Putnam County Community Improvement Corporation is preparing a leadership development course with Ohio Northern University. This is an excellent opportunity to build upon your skills. I hope you take advantage of the opportunity to gain experience and grow in new ways.

Here at the chamber, we will be focused on education in the coming year. Both for leaders and for your staff. One of the courses I'm most excited about is one that will be taught virtually by my mentor. I look forward to sharing Zan's brilliant course with everyone.

Lastly, I encourage you to find a mentor. One who tells you the hard stuff, the things you need to hear or think about along with the kudos for the things you are doing right. I'm grateful that after all these years later, I can still reach out to Zan for a quick chat and learn something to carry forward. I grew into the leader I became because he taught me to believe in myself.

The mission of the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce is to strengthen, support, and promote the economic vitality of our member businesses and community.

1. The chamber's goal is to assist area businesses with economic growth and vitality, marketing, disseminating information, building a foundation with the community for all businesses, and providing educational opportunities, services, and savings for resources such as health insurance.

New businesses and existing businesses become members for many reasons. They may want to further enhance their marketing through our marketing. They may want to be a member because of the resources. They may want to be part of a large business community. The reasons are multiple when it comes down to it.

New and Exciting Changes

Great things are happening here

Great things are happening in Ottawa these days. There was quite a big announcement a few weeks ago detailing the restoration of two of the historical buildings in our downtown corridor. The S.F. DeFord Building and the Du Mont Building will both be restored and renewed into new spaces. The owners of these buildings worked alongside the Putnam County Community Improvement Corporation, JobsOhio, and Regional Growth Partners. Over $4 million will be invested into the downtown corridor.

The DeFord building, built in 1889, will include the renovation of 30,000 square feet. The first floor will host retail and dining space. It will also feature a co-working space featuring flexible work offices. On the second floor, there will be seven rooms available for overnight guests. The second-floor rooms will be loft-style rooms, which will include family suites, executive suites, and standard suites. Most of the rooms will feature a kitchenette. The owners of the DeFord Building are Megan Seitz-Clinton, Joe Schroeder, Jeff Rieman, and Fred Schroeder. They are working with the Metzger Brecheisen Company to complete the restoration.

The Du Mont building is owned by Gillian Stechschulte, Dan Stechschulte, Scott Birkemeier, and Kevin Niese. The Du Mont building was home to the Schnipke Inn prior to its closing. At the building's conception, it was the only hotel in Putnam County with sewer and plumbing. Soon it will be reimagined into an office space, dining space, and event space. Technicon Design Group will anchor the building and be located on the third floor. The second floor will host office space. On the first floor, Ottawa Brewing Company will open and feature dining and craft beer. The Ottawa Brewing Company is owned by Dan Stechschulte and Jack Klass. Together they will work to bring quality dining and beer to the area.

It was also announced that Andy and Brianna Kaufman would be opening Putnam Paddling Company, offering canoe and kayak adventures with drop-off and pick-up along the Blanchard River.

These are exciting changes to our community. Ottawa is growing and changing in new ways while respecting the history of our past. We are truly excited to watch these changes take place. Congratulations to all of the owners and partners who worked to make these exciting changes come to the area.

Ohio New Business Growth

Ohio Experiences a Record Year of Growth

We receive reports here at the chamber regularly. The report released by Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose reported 179,636 new business filings in 2022. This was down by 18,374 filings from the record-setting 2021. However, it was also the second-highest in state history. There were 13,012 new business filings in December, making it 496 more than in December 2021.

Similarly, small businesses grew nationwide over the last two years. So how do we keep this trend going?

Don't let fear stand in your way. Instead, let it push you forward into opening that small business. We are lucky to have an excellent Economic Development team in Putnam County. The Putnam County Community Improvement Corporation, led by Amy Sealts, OhioCED, consistently works to help new businesses get off the ground. The addition of their Workforce Development division led by Karl Schimmoeller is bringing attention to finding and retaining talent in the area.
Local lending institutions are ready to assist you with business loans. The lenders in the area know our market. They are familiar with what loans would work best. In addition, they know what state programs could assist you as well.
Take a course that helps you set up your business. The chambers of Putnam County and the PCCIC run an entrepreneurial program: Open Local. The U.S. Small Business Administration also has tailored workshops to assist you.
Build a strong team of support. Starting a business can be challenging. Having a support system in place can help you work through those moments. They want to see you win, but they'll also be the most honest with you. Here at the chamber, we are always happy to be part of the support team.

That is just a snippet of what you'll need to start. But the point is to begin. We are here to help in any way we can. Our motto here at the chamber has quickly become one we recently heard at a conference. Our work isn't just work, it's our passion. Supporting and assisting businesses is the passion of this office. Setting Goals for 2023

Goal setting is an essential part of the business. I remember in one of my college business courses; the instructor asked us if we had a road map. Mind you; this was before cell phones and GPS, so we used the old-fashioned way to get around in unknown places. He said if we didn't have a road map, we'd drive around in circles, waste our gas, and feel lost. He went on to tell us that we needed to have goals in life, goals in business, and goals that would make us grow. Entering the business world during my first year in real estate, I spent a lot of time going in circles with no clear direction. I'd forgotten his advice from long ago. Then I met a great mentor and friend, Zan Monroe. He reminded me that I needed specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely goals. SMART is an acronym that I often use when talking about goals.

Specific:

In real estate, I needed to detail a specific number of appointments that would lead to listing homes. At the end of each year, I knew how many appointments I'd been on, how many homes I'd listed, and how many had sold. This created a new specific goal for the following year. Each year I meant to do better than the last. You won't give up on a specific goal or give in if it gets tricky. It's a realistic approach to obtaining whatever it is you are seeking to do.

Measurable:

A goal has to be able to be measured. Do you want to increase profits? By how much? This creates a measurable goal. You have to be able to ascertain how much you grew in profits. What was the root of the growth? How many more customers were you able to serve? This allows you to know and understand where your goal took you.

Achievable:

I always wanted to be a natural runner. So much so that I would determine that whatever new year it was, I would run weekly until it became easy for me to do. That became a frustration for me instead of being an achievable goal. The same thing applies to our businesses. A goal should be lofty but not so lofty you won't be able to achieve it. I'm all for wildly achievable goals but not the ones that are too far out of my realm like running was. I now vow to walk so many miles a year, and it's a much more obtainable goal.

Realistic:

Just like above, a goal must be realistic. We should set goals that are realistic to our business. I created realistic goals based on my prior year's performance and sales. Keeping myself grounded in my truth was important. Make sure that your goals are realistic for you. Again, don't be afraid to stretch and grow.

Timely:

Setting target dates is essential. Having monthly, quarterly, or yearly timelines will help keep you on track for the goals you want to achieve. In real estate, I knew I needed so many weekly appointments to list x amount of homes per month. Knowing when you want to reach the goal will help you stay on track.

I'm still determining what it is about the beginning of a new year that brings out the need to toss out excess and simplify. But it's what happens every year. Simplicity in business can bring great success.

A strategy of simplicity is to create a focus on what is working. It is incredibly healthy to know your strengths and weaknesses in business. For example, if bookkeeping is not your strength, hiring an accountant will free you up to focus more on what you do well.

Having a road map or business plan for the year is also essential. You can break this down by month, quarter, and year—a clearly defined view of how you want your business to operate. Naturally, hiccups will happen. A solid plan will help you work through the bumps in the road.

There are many professionals available that can help you clearly define your business plans for the year, five years, ten years, etc. However, it is paramount to have a plan.

Even here at the Chamber, we have a plan for our year and five years from now. We need to know our goals so that we can work to support your business partners. Each business is essential to us, as is its success.

A Look Back

Did anyone know what to expect from 2022 after living through 2020 and 2021? We were still determining what the business climate would be like on a local and national level. Supply chain issues became a topic we heard about quite a bit. Inflation entered our vocabulary for the first time in years. We had to learn how to manage business around a variety of obstacles. Yet, it was not a bad year for businesses. It was a ripe climate for growth and new opportunities.

The word I would use to describe 2022 would be resilience. Each of our business partners in the Chamber of commerce displayed resilience in the face of the new year. As a result, every business is entering 2023 stronger, wiser, and ready to obtain the next level of success.

The start of a new year brings opportunities with fresh ideas, growth, and success to the next level. Here at the Chamber, we look forward to a year filled with supporting our business partners, continued growth, and learning opportunities.

Our word for 2023 at the Chamber is Prosperity. We will continue to work diligently to ensure our business partners can thrive and prosper. In addition, the Chamber itself will continue to grow and expand to ensure we offer ways for our businesses to grow.

We invite you to shop local and continue your Small Business Saturday support! We were out among the holiday shoppers and heard many people express their love for our local shops. People were looking for specialty gifts and gifts for their favorite sports fans. They were enjoying the blessing of the good weather we had both Friday and Saturday. Shops were full everywhere we went. It was a fantastic sight to see.

It was special because they could have shopped anywhere, yet here they were, shopping at the local shops. Here are a few ideas for shopping this December locally.

Make a list of the items you need and write the name of the local shops that would carry those items. If you need more time, you can call ahead, and they may even be able to put it aside for you.
You can purchase gift cards for that unexpected guest or friend. You can even pre-purchase for birthdays in January.
It doesn't even have to be gift related. Want to freshen up your wardrobe for the winter? Take advantage of the great sales happening.
Looking for experiences to give? Music lessons, riding lessons, art lessons, plan a trip with your local travel advisor, grab a calendar and select one day a month to meet at a local restaurant, coffee gift cards, zoo memberships, dance classes, cooking classes-the list can go on and on.
Purchase and donate books to your local library in honor of someone who loves books.

There are so many options for shopping locally and gift-giving. But it doesn't have to be gifts; it could be items you need regularly. When our businesses thrive, our community thrives, and we thrive.

Business Spotlight: All American Home Care, LLC

All American Home Care, LLC was formed out of a passion for helping others. Kimberly Miller and her mother, Carol Patrick, are passionate about helping others, especially older adults and their families. Carol, a clinical psychologist, and Kimberly, a gerontologist, put their combined skills and strengths together to form a business that would not only assist older adults and their families but educate the community on various aspects of aging.

Meeting Kimberly, you immediately understand why her passion is in adult home care. Her genuine passion for the elderly and adults in need of this extra care exudes from her. She understands the complexities of aging in place. Kimberly chatted with us regarding the care her team provides for adults and families. Often family members spend time taking care of tasks, and they do not get as much time with their family members.

The services provided by All American Home Care are non-medical. They provide care that allows the aging adult to maintain independence and alleviates the pressures on them to do some of the tasks they may be unable to manage. It also helps to create more time for families to spend together. Older adults age better when they can continue to live in their own homes and maintain independence. They are surrounded by their possessions and able to receive family and friends while receiving additional help with the things they need assistance with.

Kimberly explored many options in college before settling into the study of Gerontology, which is the study of aging. She likens herself to an old soul, and it was a natural fit for her to work with the elderly. She and Carol opened the business in Delphos in 2019. They serve the surrounding counties, including Putnam, and truly feel they are following their calling.

The duo also provides educational opportunities on issues older adults face to their staff and family members. They felt it was an important aspect of their business. Their well-trained staff strives to lighten the load of many family caregivers to prevent caregiver burnout. This allows better quality time for those family members to spend with their aging parent or relative.

All American Home Care became a member of the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce in 2019, the year they opened the business. They felt that it was important to be part of the community they served and to share their skills and services here in Putnam County. They are looking forward to growing here as they continue to provide services to families here.

Business Spotlight-Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio-Jason Cox

Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio is warm and welcoming to all who enter through the doors. Jason Cox, LNHA and marketing director of MHCO, is one of the faces you may see when you visit. He’s a 3rd generation senior care worker, following in the footsteps of his grandmother and father. His grandmother, Joanne Cox, was the Administrator of the Putnam County Home for many years. Jason’s father grew up in the senior living community, as did Jason. It was simply a way of life and wasn’t work most of the time. Jason is the Director of Marketing.

I had the opportunity to visit Jason at Hilty Home in Pandora. The Hilty farm was gifted with the implicit intention of a senior care facility being built there. Margaret Hilty envisioned how she wanted the family land to be used. The Hilty Home was opened in 1979 and has since become part of the Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio.

The main facility has dining rooms, recreation rooms, and private and semi-private resident rooms. Hilty Home also features a memory care facility. In addition, there are assisted living quarters in the main facility and detached condos just behind the main facility. A long-term transition to home rehabilitation facility is available. The wing has a rehabilitation gym, lounge, and rooms for patients. What was so heartwarming is that as we toured the facility, many residents stopped Jason and spoke with him. On this day, the residents had a trip to get ice cream on my visit. They were sweet, and we chatted about their ice cream choices.

A daycare and preschool are next to the care facility—a garden and playground stand between them, where residents can watch the children play. The residents also interact with the preschoolers. It’s beneficial to the residents and the children.

As for Jason, he had other plans for his career. He set out to do something completely different, never intending to work in senior care. There were many paths, but it led Jason back to the one thing he knew and loved: Senior Living. It was not only a career he knew and understood, but it was fulfilling alongside raising his young family.

The Mennonite Home Communities have been members of the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce since 2019. Many residents were from Putnam County and felt it was essential to connect to the community. They have experienced the ability to network with other businesses and organizations and immerse themselves in the community.

Jason genuinely enjoys working at Mennonite Home Communities because it is small, local, and faith-based. The board members are local, the employees are local, and everyone knows how important it is to be true to the mission of MHCO. The organization is firm in its mission and core values as a Christ-centered community. Being part of this organization has allowed him to follow the things he believes in where he works and provide for his family. Working in an environment that allows faith to be at the forefront is a comfort.

Each day brings a diverse set of opportunities to help others through a new phase of life. Being a part of a non-profit presents unique challenges but knowing that the bottom line is fulfilling the organization’s mission of providing a purposeful living for those they serve is rewarding.

Let's Get Real

Putting the effort into local

We can't be sad about losing local shops when we don't support them. They need us every day. Not just when they have great sales for us to save money, but every day. Recently I was talking to someone about how happy they were that the Red Pig is reopening. I said to them " We have to go more than we did. We have to show them that we appreciate them being back so that we don't lose them again." So in my family, we're going to start a Wednesday night supper club. We plan to invite people along that we don't get to chat with on a regular basis. Really any night they are open is a good night to support our local restaurants. Sunday Brunch at Henry's is another great treat! The point is to go out and let's show them some local love.

What does it mean to shop locally? It means you invest in your community of store owners by shopping there for what you need. Does it cost more? Sometimes is my general answer, but it's worth it. By shopping locally I was able to find the right size clothes for a preemie baby who was in the NICU in Tennessee. My daughter's friend had an emergency delivery, and her baby was less than 4 pounds. She had no clothes for her. So I popped into the local store, and they had enough to get this sweet little girl started with some clothes. Those pj's I bought her will grow with her. She won't need to hurry to find bigger clothes right away. She loved them so much and now knows she can go online and shop from them. Did it cost me a little more? In the end not really. The longevity of the clothing, not having to drive all over to find just the right size, and saving on gas balanced out the cost. So in reality I did not spend more money. The savings on my time, travel, wear and tear on my car, and the cost of gas more than offset the cost for me and I was able to support a local shop. Stop by The Olive Tree Boutique if you need clothing for newborn babies or toddlers.

There are so many wonderful treasures right here in Putnam County to wander through. I can typically find most anything I'm looking for right here in our grocery stores, clothing stores, coffee shops, gifts shops, etc. The list goes on and on about how being local does in fact save you money. You are investing your money right back into the community which then benefits you as well. Community parks, roads, lower taxes, etc. There are many ways that your dollars spent are returned locally. You are also keeping your neighbors, friends, and family running a business. We tend not to think about that when we pull our debit cards out and shop online.

It's about creating that habit to start shopping with the intention of being local. Small Business Saturday is November 26th. We celebrate Small Business Month here at the chamber with our passport program. I'd love to see every small business celebrated throughout the year. All it takes is creating the habit of shopping local, supporting local, and being local. We hope that this November you begin a new habit of shopping local and taking advantage of what is here in our area. You just might find you can get exactly what you wanted and more.

Collaboration

Collaboration is such a pivotal element in the chamber and how we operate. Teamwork is the ultimate way of accomplishing big things and the little things. The goal of this chamber is always to be collaborative in mindset. We appreciate what it takes to make things work on any scale.

Being collaborative helps bring the community, businesses, and people together. We all win when we are working together towards common and individual goals. It allows us to learn from one another, share common goals and grow together. We understand the pain points we all experience and, together, can work to move past them with solutions we may not have thought about.

In your business, collaboration and teamwork lead to open communication, better retention of employees, and higher resolution of problem-solving. By being part of the conversation and solutions, employees contribute to the business's success and growth.

Growth comes when we tear down the walls of what we know and look for new ways to communicate and include others in the conversation. It creates an open line for communication for all. It helps everyone take ownership of the growth and success of the company. It creates an environment of trust.

Small Town, Big Ideas

It all starts with an idea

Today we attended the Putnam County Community Improvement Corporation's State of the Vision breakfast. It was filled with people from all walks of business and life. The common theme for everyone in the room was the belief in our area, the companies, and most importantly, the people that operate and run those businesses daily. Amy Sealts and her team did an excellent job connecting the community and businesses.

I furiously took notes, trying to keep up with all the different avenues the chamber could help support our business partners to grow and thrive. The business growth in some of our manufacturing facilities is fantastic. We heard from Kurt Kroplin about Whirlpool and its expansion into premium refrigeration. They've already built one for a very high-profile musical couple. We heard from Michelle Rabe, who started her own business in pursuit of doing something that followed a dream. She opened her business: Woman of War Smokehouse. She is a wholesale smoked fish operation catering to restaurants. She had a goal and decided to pursue it. It was inspiring to hear her talk about the steps she took to leave her years in finance behind to open this warehouse. We listened to Bob Lennon, Silgan Plastics, talk about how their high-tech improvements wouldn't put people out of jobs but would add a few more employees. Their approach echoed throughout the morning, which involved investing in the people who work with them daily. Their employees will learn how to work on these machines and run a smooth and efficient operation with them.

We then met Jason Duff, Small Nation Founder, and CEO. His passion for small-town America, especially Northwest Ohio, bars none. He not only helped forge this idea that small-town America can come back to life, but he also lived it daily. His passion for the businesses that opened in Bellefontaine is beyond what I would have imagined. If the pizza shop needs pizza makers on a Friday night, he's there making pizzas. Because success matters to him not just on a professional level but, more importantly, on a personal level, he's invested in the growth of those business owners who took a chance and said yes. He encouraged the room to dare to be different and to take a chance. If someone says no, then ask the question again in different ways until they say yes.

There was so much more that he shared, but the thing I took to heart the most is that our community is comprised of the risk takers, the dare to be different business owners, and people who heard no a hundred times before they heard yes. We all want that spot to hang out with friends on a Friday night after a long week. A place to go with the kids after a game. Somewhere to enjoy brunch on Sunday. We all want our hometown to be what we wanted it to be.

So what is your dream? If you heard yes, instead of no, would you be ready to take the next step? Amy Sealts and her team are prepared to help you do just that. We are right there to help as well. You immediately feel welcomed when you first meet Sarah Klausing and Kendra Kuhlman. It's not just part of their roles at First National Bank; it's who they are. Walking into First National Bank in Ottawa, you are welcomed by the friendly faces along the teller line. They are members of the thriving bank located at 855 N Locust Street. I was fortunate to sit down with Kendra and Sarah to discuss their roles within the bank. Kendra and Sarah both have a passion for working and assisting others. It's not just part of the company mission; it is truly part of who they are. Their motto is always service to the customer so that banking is easier for them. It's about the customer, first and always. Sarah Klausing is the Branch Manager, Consumer Loan Lender, and Kendra Kuhlman is the Marketing Director. They both truly enjoy their roles within First National Bank and are ready to help wherever they can.

First National Bank has been an Ottawa Area Chamber Member since 1994. Kendra and Sarah are chamber members and see the many valuable resources it provides their business. Being a chamber member allows networking with other businesses and building relationships with other companies. It is another way to participate in Ottawa's growing and thriving community. Kendra is a sitting member of the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. It's also wonderful that Sarah and Kendra have become wonderful friends through their work together, finding more than just work as a common bond. Their sons have played sports together and were born only 4 days apart.

Kendra and Sarah are often found out in the community volunteering their time and energy to service groups, community events, and the schools. Working for a community bank allows them to build lifelong relationships. They get to work alongside people and empower others to achieve their dreams. Their focus is on serving families, small businesses, and local farmers. Customer Service is Valuable Trait

We often have conversations in the office regarding our customer service. We strive to provide good, valuable information and customer service. Today we discussed the connection between the longevity of a business and customer service.

We've all experienced a variety of levels of service. Not every experience is great. But sometimes that experience is so great you want to shout it from the rooftops to shop at that location. We often receive this kind of experience from the businesses we visit. It makes you feel good to be appreciated as a consumer.

How can you elevate your customer service to have raving fans? Here are a few tips.

Always greet your customers when they come into your shop. Being welcomed not only makes each person feel special but it is also nice to feel seen. Once you've greeted them and learned their name, use it. It's nice to hear a simple hello but if you hear your name in that follow-up conversation it elevates the conversation.
Don't be afraid to offer tips and suggestions. You are the experts in your business, don't be afraid to share your knowledge.
Don't forget to follow up with them with anything you needed to get answers for. Nothing is worse than waiting on answers only to never get them. Make sure you get the information to your customers so they feel important. No one ever forgets being made to feel important.
Do not talk poorly about other customers, ever. Even if it was the worst kind of customer leave that for private chatter and not public. Most customers might recognize themselves if you put it out on social media or they hear it from someone who was in your shop. Use those moments to learn how to continue delivering the best customer service you can.
Set clear customer service standards for your staff. Training and practice are great ways to implement the kind of customer service you wish to deliver.

Your customers are your best advertisers. They'll relay the experience they had at your shop to everyone. I know I left a shop today shouting its praises as soon as I returned to the office. Here's hoping all of your customers shout your praises daily!

Shower Small Business with Support

I recently read an article explaining how our current economy affects small businesses. The news was as you would expect. The cost of doing business has increased, but up to 40% of small businesses have not increased their prices. Here locally, we've experienced that, I believe. Many small business owners absorb the additional cost of doing business, higher employee wages, and supply chain issues while not raising prices for the consumer.

So what can we do for our small and locally owned businesses? We can show up and shop there. Shower them with your support and share their businesses with your friends and family. Share the links to their online websites. Stop by and purchase a few things to keep for gifts when the unexpected need arises or a few things for yourself. Stop by the farmer's markets and farm stands to pick up locally grown and sourced food items. There are so many ways you can support locally owned businesses.

Need something printed? We've got that local. Want to know where your meat came from? Shop our local butcher shops and grocery store. Want fresh bread and pastries? We have that too! It's all here local.

Shopping local keeps our economy strong and helps keep those local business owners in the business. When you shop locally, you are helping your neighbors. So this week, I hope you visit some of our locally owned shops and support them.

Why Join the Chamber of Commerce?

Why should I join the chamber? It's a valid question. The answer is multifaceted. There are many good reasons why joining the chamber can enhance your business.

The chamber of commerce is designed to be a source of support and growth for your business. We continually promote the businesses that are part of the chamber to get their message out. But it's more than all of this to me. The power of the network of businesses that can work together, support one another and stand together in tough times as well as good times is the spirit of the chamber. People working with the same interest: Success of their businesses and community. We all work together to promote a healthy and economically strong community. Our goals are your goals. WE work hard to continue encouraging small businesses' growth and sustainability. We are your partners through it all.

The chamber of commerce is a non-profit organization. We do host fundraising events throughout the year, including our Golf tournament. We host monthly luncheons and breakfasts to offer networking opportunities and provide up-to-date information from the chamber. These events are designed to allow you to talk about your businesses with other members. Each meeting features a Business Announcement Minute for you to share your wins, promotions, new hires, or anything about your business. Celebrate your successes with us. We publish two monthly newsletters filled with information to help your businesses grow, sharing your business news, our news, and our partnership benefits. Our newest endeavor is to get out information in this blog. We market your news, businesses, and events on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Our Small Business events are also promotion of your businesses.

Most importantly, the people behind the businesses matter to us. We know that your business is your livelihood. We are here to support you in any way we can.

We offer many benefits of membership. These benefits help you save money for your business in the best and uncertain times.

Energy Saver Program.
This can be used both on your business energy cost and your personal home!
The savings could be infused back into your business annually. As an example, a company using Dominion Gas could save up to 1400.00 yearly (or more depending on the average usage)
It costs nothing to use the program, and they will give your bill a free review and an honest assessment of your cost. If they can't save you money, they'll also tell you that

Believe in it

Do you love your business? Do others know why you love your business? Do you shout it out to anyone who can hear your message?

People need to know why you believe in what you do. If they understand it, then they will believe in it as well. Have you ever met someone so passionate about what they do for a living that they told strangers about it in the grocery line? Those are the people who believe that everyone needs to know about their business.

If you aren't sharing your message often, you may be missing the opportunity to let others know what you do. There are so many avenues to share your messaging these days. Facebook, Instagram, a website, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc., are all public spaces where you can share your message.

People are more likely to shop with you when they know, like, and trust you. Are you talking to your customers when they come in to shop? Are you dazzling them with excellent customer service? Are you celebrating your wins openly? Do you respond to their comments on your social media post? Do you reward your customers for their loyalty? Are you helping them solve problems?

My friend Sean Carpenter has a motto: Build Relationships, Solve Problems but most importantly Have fun. My mentor, Zan Monroe, reminded me not to be an invisible Realtor. So I'm going to remind you not to be an invisible business. Believe in what you do, and why you do it, and don't be afraid to tell people about it.

Here are a few tips to help you be more public with your businesses:

Do share your business with anyone who will listen. You never know who may know your next raving fan or become your raving fan.
Do not be afraid to approach people to ask for their support. Are you running a promotion? Share it everywhere and with us here at the Chamber.
Do network and get out there meeting other business owners. You may help them solve a problem or vice versa. You never know what kind of impact you might have on someone else or they may have on you.

What's Your Why?

Recently I had the pleasure of hearing one of our local business members speak. When she talked about her why I perked up even more, she was engaging and candid about how her why has changed over the years as she grew personally and professionally. It was beautiful to hear and see the growth in her business over the last few years.

Why you do what you do is important. If you do not know why you opened your business or want a particular outcome, it is hard to see where you are going. A business plan is one of the tools you will need along your path. It helps you know the metrics you will measure your successes and failures. But your why, that is different.

Your why could start with you wanting to make more money to support your family. When I first started selling real estate, my reason was to be able to pay for our daughter’s college tuition and save them from taking out loans. It evolved to take vacations that we had never been able to take as a military family. It changed and grew from year to year until 2015. My why was forever solidified with the birth of our first grandson. It was like a lightning bolt. Everything I did was to ensure I could spend time with him and his parents, watching him grow.

Our why here at the chamber is simple. We believe in the people who set out to run their businesses and help grow this community. We are in the people business. We truly see the value of each person and want to know their story and their why and help them along their path. Our why is each of our members and their success.

Your why does not have to be complicated or remain the same. It can and should change over the growth of your goals.

You grab your phone, find the item, slide to buy now, and in 2-5 days, a box arrives at your door. Easy and convenient, right!? But is it always the best way to shop? I did the unthinkable for lent this year and gave up online shopping. After lent was over, I thought I'd resume my sometimes daily shopping habit of purchasing what I just knew I needed. I don't mind those little or big boxes not showing up anymore. I put much more thought into what I buy since this experiment of sorts. It's not the convenience I need anymore, but the ability to shop locally for what I genuinely need. Here are a few of the things that matter when you shop locally.

You are helping your neighbors and community by spending your money locally. Shopping at a locally owned business could be helping out your neighbor or even a family member. Money spent within the community stays in the community. It helps pay for things like a new splash pad, improvements to the town, lower taxes, and improvements to schools and programs. It's not just the businesses you help, but yourself and others.

You can trust what you are purchasing! Have you ever bought something that looked great in all their marketing photos but upon receiving it weeks later, it just doesn't hold up to the quality it should have been? Did you try to return that item only to be told you couldn't, or worse, you couldn't get a single person on the phone? Buying local gives you the ability to trust what you've bought is good quality. It also allows you to sort out any issues you may have face to face.

A strong business economy equals economic strength within the community . Local businesses hire local people. Thus putting more money back into the economy within your community. A strong business economy attracts new companies. New businesses bring in more options for shopping locally. It's a win-win.
